Today I decided to change the along behind this blog and give a more “day in the life” approach to working as a Virtual Assistant as my “side hustle.”

Today I joined Ty-Juana Flores of Style Your Curves for a Sip and Swap event in conjunction with Dress for Success. I of course was honored to have Ms. Flores ask me to volunteer and be apart of a great cause.

Today’s Sip and Swap consisted of great people, great location( Scholars Boston) great conversation and plenty of clothes!

In the midst of the event I engaged in great networking conversations. This of course can lead to great business opportunities!!! The social media aspect was very present with the use of hashtags and tagging of photos to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Todays hashtag was #sycswap. This became the movement for the entire evening. Attendees immediately began taking photos, tagging people and of course including the hashtags. As someone very in tune with the social media world I immediately began doing my part. The Instagram and Facebook likes came through and let’s not forget those tweets!

From a business point of view I engaged in great conversation with some amazing people. It is always important to remember there is power in words. You never know what will come next.

#vatipoftheday: consider creating a hashtag for your next business event or create a following for your social media presence

When should I post?

With social media established as a way of life, for small businesses this aspect is just as important and crucial to the growth and success of a business. From Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Pintrest the art behind effective social media success is the time at which you post.

Apps like hoot suite allow for effective social media capitalization with the ability to post updates on multiple sites at the same time. According to Social Media Today  depending upon which social media outlet you use there are key timeframes where your post can provide the most attention.

  • Facebook – between 10 am and 4pm Monday thru Thursday.
  • Twitter – between 1pm and 3pm Monday thru Thursday.
  • LinkedIn – focus on posting before and after business hours, 7 am to 9 am and 5pm to 6pm Tuesday thru Thursday.
  • Google+ – 9am to 11am on workdays.
  • Pinterest – This is the one social network you should focus on posting during weekday evenings and on the weekends. specifically 2pm to 4pm and 8pm to 1am on weekdays. The best time to pin items on Pinterest is on Saturday morning.

When it comes to social media always consider your audience. Not every business will operate under the same framework.

What to ask your virtual assistant?

The use of a virtual assistant can be foreign and even intimidating to some business owners or busy professionals that are unfamiliar with the concept. In my own personal experience with my clients I have noticed the hesitation from clients who are not too sure on the most appropriate questions to ask.

It is important that the virtual assistant explain their services and what they have the capacity to do. I’ve noticed once their is an explanation of the services I can provide clients are generally more clear in their own business needs.

According to VAnetworking.com here are some questions to ask your virtual assistant:

  1. What is your personality type?
  2. Communication style?
  3. How often do you like to communicate
  4. What type of commitment can you provide?
  5. What type of work style do you prefer?
  6. Any certifications?

For a VA the relationship built with their client or potential client is one that can be a long lasting partnership so it is important to ask the appropriate questions in order to achieve the best results for your business.
